Trevor workman plays the second movement of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto on the Bournville Carillon in Birmingham, England.

The Bournville Carillon was erected in a semi-rural location in 1906, before the onslaught of urban development and the building of the busy main road by which it now stands adjacent. However, Bournville remains an idyllic leafy suburb of Birmingham in the English West Midlands, and the sound of the carillon drifting across the gardens of Bournville on a perfect summer's day is truly wonderful.

This carillon ranks as one of the finest and largest in Great Britain, having 48 bells hung below a domed copper cupola above the tower of of the junior and infant schools on Bournville Village Green.

The idea of installing a carillon in Bournville came to George Cadbury, when on a visit to Belgium, he heard the famous carillon of Bruges, which dates from 1675. He was impressed with the sound of the carillon and also the high regard in which it was held by its citizens.

  • Can anybody tell me where in Bournville this carillon is? I can play peels and hyms on carillons but it only has one octave so one of this scale appeals to me

  • @lone2000ian Hey, the carillon is on the roof of the junior school. It's a huge copper cupola on the roof, opposite the Bournville green. Look up - you can't miss it! For it to be considered a carillon it must have in excess of 22 bells. Where do you play?

  • 1 The original carillon of Bourneville was inspired on the big instrument in the Belfort in Bruges in Belgium. Mr. Cadburry listened to it in the beginning of the 20th century and wanted such an instrument for his own town. The concert carillon is now developing in the British Isles. Even York Minster has one nowadays. Lots of big towers in Britain are hungry for an instrument like this. (Canterbury; Liverpool ; Lincoln) (see next)

  • 2When is next cathedral getting a set of bells for concerts on Sunday after the service in the cathedral? You have excellent bell founders in Britain. See the new instrument in Bruges after restoration on youtube. You can see it in my favorites or listen to it on the site of the it. (search for Beiaard Brugge) Trevor Workman is a welcome player in the Netherlands and Belgium. This Mendelssohn piece sounds great on bells. Thanks for this movie.

  • It's a church in Lancashire. The playing device is of the exact same structure as this, with there being C to C and Bb and F# (only 10 bells), and only one person is needed to play it. I don't know what it is called then! Thanks

  • A very nice sound!

  • That's so he can play for long periods without causing blisters or breaking the skin.. They're made from a chamois leather, stitched together... you can try making them!

  • What does he have on his left finger? I want one of those for when I play carillon!
