When you dump your rig on a boat that size, cutting it away is the fastest and most reliable way to ensure it doesn't do something much worse, like punch a hole in your hull. It is financially regrettable, but necessary to the safety of all involved.

Hey ! They intentionaly left a piece of the mast in the sea. That's no correct. Too much money for an ugly action.

What do you want to do??? bring it back onboard with your two hands?? leaving it is the first thing to do when you break.

They probably knew that they would recover it later.

I hope they gave the CG a decent tip. I wonder how many man-hrs goes into building a spar that size.

It can take up to a 1,000 man hours to make a boom for a boat this size. A mast is far more complicated. I'm no mast maker but 10,000 man hours might be in the right order.

If they didn't cut it free it would probably have acted like a sea anchor - they wouldn't have been able to move very well under motor and if they got a wave it could have sunk/rolled them - I don't think they had much of a choice. Of course they would want to retrieve a rig like that though - might have helped discovered why it failed.
