In this episode we play a piece by the French composer Gabriel Faure. It is the Elegy. This piece is quite well known among cellists and audiences and I received quite a few requests for it. We thought we would play it. Both the cello and piano have very nice parts in this piece.

  • What strings ya using fellow cellist? I use Spirocores on the bottom strings and Larson(I don't know if they are solos or not) on A and D. Do I see a Larson D string and a Jargar A with spirocores on the bottom? :)

  • @orchestracelloplayer Larsens A and D. Spirocore G, C. Possibly Larsen C.

  • Cello is such a beautiful instrument, your videos are an inspiration for me to continue practice the cello!! so one day i will be able to play this beautiful!

  • @kupomashimaro All the best with your playing.

  • hehe, I played along with my flute. It ties in nicely with a lot of your pieces. It sounds wonderful with a piano and cello. Its a nice top note harmony. :) You guys rock the classical! lol.

  • Thanks. I really like the flute.

  • I think people overdo vibrato, confusing it with expression. I like your amount just fine.

  • @silvr94 You do make a very good point. Many times I would make extra shifts and use alternate strings to alter the timbre, but it just seemed at the time of me watching this video (compared to my own cello, at least) that you were making about 5 shifts for every 3 I made.

  • Well done. Thanks for sharing :)

  • @aseretkavon well i find that certain strings and areas on the string sound different than others. each cello is individual.

  • i love the last part with the piano and cello, are amazing musicians!

  • :L i dont like how people make stuff sound more echo-ey to make them sound better

  • You did an amazing job!

However, as a cellist studying this piece, I noticed that you made a lot more shifts than "necessary," especially near the beginning. Is there any reason why?

  • Nice job... I would prefer a much wider, "juicier" vibrato for this piece though.
