  • @mujerado ...in a recording like this, for elementary scientific and engineering reasons, much musical information is inescabably and inevitably lost...whether this "matters", or how much, is, perhaps a matter of personal "taste"(?), but between the way Mr.K sounded in the actual sonic event and the way he sounds here, yes, there is quite a difference...

  • @fredericfranc Old is not the same as junky. For its time this was high quality sound, and the remastering brings out everything that was there. If you care about piano performance, though, the old sound, monaural and all, is totally irrelevant.

  • he and this piece were the tightest of lovers...

  • ...with the horribly junky sonics it is sort of hard to say what is going on...Kapell was some kind of a natural "Prokofievian"...but he was damn near "natural" anything...

  • I beg your pardon, you said C major? :)

  • The orchestra is not very good.

  • Still the finest performance of this piece on record.

  • Tremendous spiritedness and symbolism packaged into this performance. William Kapell hangs onto every note, never overpowering the orchestra. To me he is the James Dean of piano, too short a life but had a good enough output to keep him in the spotlight of main contenders. Thank you for this excellent set.

  • Thanks for posting, this pianist makes a lasting impression, love it.

  • The best recording of this concerto I know of; it has been a favourite for many years. Madly electrifying, insanely passionate, yet infernally controlled and structured - as it should be.
