I've recently been experimenting with notes from the Melodic Minor scale. I think the natural 7th note really takes you away from the obvious Dorian vibe that is commonly used to solo over a minor vamp. Hope my examples help you in some way.

Bye for now,

Matt.

  • Cool thanks!!! which chord are you using on the back?? any m7 chord would do it right? sorry for the lame questions but I'm just learning to improvise!

  • @Oswah That's not a lame question at all my friend. Yes, any minor 7 chord. It was a Scott Henderson (amazing player to check out if you like fusion) video that gave me this idea. He said that he'll play a major or minor 7 note over a m7 chord, it's really up to you and the vibe you want to create. You do have to practice some restraint though as the major 7 note sounds very 'out there' compared to the trusty old minor pentatonic: )

  • Great lesson thanks for posting!

  • @tulsa9999 Thanks man : )

  • Really liked the idea:) I'll try to incorporate it in my playing!

  • @masnak1994 Thanks man. I've worked on this idea a lot since uploading this video and I'm better at applying it now. I find it's way too easy to disappear up your own ass and sound like a jazz wannabe if your not careful, so less is definitely more with this stuff. I watch this vid and laugh as I think there's way too many badly placed Melodic Minor notes in the improv, anyway, I'm always looking to improve; )

  • @Hulahop36 Thanks, very constructive. You sound like an intelligent guy.

  • @gizatoob What's misleading about the title? My purpose was to show how I mix the 2 scales when improvising over minor7 chords. I'm no expert at this, I just like to share my progress for free with my YouTube friends. I see that you also upload guitar vids too (unlike Mr Friendly above) so I will always listen to guys like you over anonymous haters and I'm sorry you didn't get anything from this vid.

  • I love your accent! sweet video bro

  • very cool, thanks for posting this!

  • @Hulahop36 why did you even bother typing that I am glad I am not even closely associated with anyone as negative as you are. If you dont like it dont say anything unless its constructive . Or maybe you cant do this and it makes you feel inadequate. Either way, Matt i really enjoyed it your playing is very tastefull and good tone for all the styles that I have seen. Just dont get the negativity of some people i guess their glass is half empty.

  • Nice going Matt - just a word to those who want to know more about this magical combination, check out the clip on here by brilliant jazz player John Stowell "#4 Melodic Minor Scale" - wonderful stuff with a really hypnotising sound.

    Thanks again Matt!
