After 21 years leasing the Mandarin Community Club as their sanctuary,
members of the Buckman Bridge Unitarian Universalist Church today said
goodbye to the building that once served as a school for slave
children under the direction of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle
Tom's Cabin.
To celebrate their two-decade partnership with the Mandarin community,
members of the church's Social Action Community held a tree-planting
ceremony after today's worship. The Tea Olive will serve as a symbol
of peace and represent how the church grew from 22 charter members to
more than 200 today.
Next Sunday, Buckman Bridge Unitarian Universalist Church will hold
its first service at its new sanctuary that church members just
completed building, located at 8447 Manresa Ave., which is across the
street from NAS Jacksonville's south fence off Collins Road and
Roosevelt Boulevard.
The service will begin with a 10:10 a.m. gathering where a ribbon will
be cut and peace doves will be released in the air to serve as a
symbol of the liberal denomination's stance on peace and justice. The
Rev. Jack Ford will give the message. After the service we will plant
another tree to symbolize our desire for future growth.
