Because CJD can mimic many other diseases, it is tricky to diagnose. Michael Geschwind,, MD PhD, of UCSF's Memory and Aging Center, explains various methods used for diagnosing CJD, including diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) MR scans, which he considers the most reliable tool currently available.

    I had 15 neurologists and 15 psychiatrists tell my mom that she had a "brain glitch" even after my dad mentioned the possibility of CJD.
