I feel the same, absolutely.
Handel music sounds good, but BAch music comes from another dimension.

I wonder if the composer envisioned the host of angels that appeared to the shepherds when he wrote those fluttery string parts.
Handel's Messiah also has fluttery string parts where angels are indicated.

@MUSCEDEHP This movement and one other are the only movements of these 6 cantatas that were freshly composed. The rest of the movements are all parodies (adaptations) of earlier works.

while listening to Bach, I could swear he is the best, then i listen to Handel and get all confused.

@stacooper76 This "monumental work" is actually 6 separate cantatas. I - V were adapted from 3 secular cantatas. VI was adapted from a lost church cantata and an aria from the St. Mark Passion. Each of the 6 Xmas cantatas was performed on a DIFFERENT Xmas feast day (I on Dec.25, II on Dec. 26, and III on Dec. 27 of 1734 and IV on Jan. 1, V on Jan. 2 and VI on Jan. 6 of 1735) as part of the LITURGY of the St. Thomas and St. Nicholas churches. Not as a 2 1/2 hours of concert hall entertainment.

@MUSCEDEHP Let's not forget that parts 1-5 were recycled from secular cantatas:
BWV 213 for the 11th birthday of Saxon Prince Friedrich Christian; BWV 214 for the birthday of Maria Josepha, Saxon Electress and future Queen in Poland; BWV 215 for the coronation of the Saxon Elector as King in Poland. Part 6 was recycled from a lost church cantata BWV 248a and from St. Mark's Passion.

People , we had Gardiner in front of CBC Vancouver orchestra fot many (good) years.. I never mis one of his performances.
Now he evolved to what he is now. good for him.
On this monumental work -- 2&½ hours -- parts I and V are my fevourites.
Thank you.♦

Let's not forget he wrote this hole thing in Leipzig, where he was full of work to do, raising children, teaching, and dealing with his unsatisfied bosses...
