I see points in both your vid and Jillete's. I think polarizing characters are essential to the process because they accentuate the "shades of grey". For example I see the presidencies of Barack Obama and George Bush as two of the most terrific events in American history, because after having sat and endured the worst of both political sides, people got desperate and began looking for other options. However, I do also believe that such wing-cling behavior alienates more moderate people.

The message is -- Silence = Consent. Penn wanted the nation to understand his views... they contravene the rhetoric of glenn beck... yet he defends him because he is weak and feeble compared to the liberal academic giants. He pities glenn beck, and that much is obvious to astute observers like me. It's the, "I'm cool, but I play chess with the nerds" psychology. Penn is a real libertarian, glenn beck isn't... it's only cool until you get called a nerd too.
