When DSW was a close-out footwear operation, it "didn't need a lot of choice and control." Then they made the fundamental shift to being a specialty footwear retailer. With a store capacity of 24,000 pairs of shoes, tailoring inventory to local tastes became a major challenge. Management saw a pressing need for a more sophisticated, integrated toolkit.
