He really didn't know what he was doing because this is one of the most awkward pieces to play on viola.. hence it's extremely difficult. :P

Brahms knew what he was doing, okay? Besides, "up the octave" is contingent upon the player's viola and general vibrato. In any case, since you missed it, she does much of it "up the octave"---at least everything on page 1.
