The smallest restaurant in town is still doing quite well after 57 years, although Al died 3 or 4 years ago at age 97 (which made the front page of the local paper) and there has inevitably been some turnover among staff and regulars. It's still crowded, the piles of customers' ancient ticket books still line the shelves beneath the coffee cups, and the stained glass lamps from the 1970s are all still there. The staff still hollers orders in the same jargon, the menu is still more or less the same, the air is still thick with bacon and fried potatoes, and you still wait a long, long time to get one of those fourteen seats. (July 2007.)
