A pregnant woman who was forced to lie on her belly during a police stop in Independence is suing.
An attorney for Yvette Hayes said it was a case of racial profiling and is charging assault, battery and negligence.
A civil rights group said Hayes was singled out for being black and that her treatment was outrageous. Hayes, who is principal of a Kansas City school, was stopped in July at Interstate 70 and Highway 40. Hayes was five months pregnant at the time and her two daughters, ages 4 and 18 months, were also in her green Jeep.
Hayes had just left the JC Penney's parking lot in Independence.
A vehicle that looked like a green Jeep was reportedly involved in car thefts from the area, so a security guard from JC Penney called police, who then pulled her over on the side of the interstate.
