Rare Black Forest Wood Carved piece. Carved out of Boxwood or most likely Linden wood and has incredible detail. The 4 characters, baby and dog are relief cut at least 1" from the background. This type of Relief Carving is highly collectible. You don't see these to often though which makes them tough to price. Although these Swiss woodcarvings are commonly known today as Black Forest they are in fact not from that region at all. The Black Forest, Der Schwarzwald in German, is a beautiful forested area near Freiburg, Germany that stretches down to the Swiss Border and eastwards. This area does not have a tradition of fine woodcarving but examples collected from Switzerland in the 19th and early 20th centuries acquired the title Black Forest and so it has remained to this day. However many discerning worldwide collectors will refer to the woodcarvings as being Brienz.
