A song written by one of Robert E. Lee's aides while sitting in a Union prison camp.

  • Traitorous swill!

  • @Thx1138d Considering the Confederacy's stance towards the rights of states were closer to those of the founding fathers I fail to see how they could be considered 'traitors.'

    Btw, nice Lucas reference.

  • @TThorne931 You are in favor of raping southern women? If you were to say that shit in public you wouldn't live long. I for one would not stand for it. It is because of bastards like you that war is always so hard on the women and children. At least the south had a code of conduct. They were honorable. Abraham lincoln said about the fallen "let us care for his widow and his children" .

  • @97ChildRebel I understand WHY they felt that way at the time, but thats not a good reason to feel that way here and now. Its not a good thing to be so consumed by negative emotions. No, sorry, Ill stick to "Dixie" or "the bonnie blue flag".

  • I won't be reconstructed and I don't care a damn

  • @vandpubsell Yes, they would. How would you feel if you were fighting an enemy for five years, just to be defeated & forced to join with them again? I for one, would be pretty angry & hate anything they had to do with.

  • This song truly captures the bitterness many former Southern soldiers felt in the war's immediate aftermath. What is awesome & amazing is how quickly this country reunited --- especially when compared to so many other nations who have had experienced civil wars in their past. By 1898 & the War with Spain, many ex-Confederate officers held high command in the Army that invaded Cuba including Joe Wheeler & Fitzhugh Lee. Today, the war lingers on in memory but not in bitterness.

  • Sorry with Stuart

  • Sorry it was by Major Innes Randolph and he was Stuart!

  • I dont see why people keep bringing up all these insults and shouting at each other. The fact is the war is over, one side won and the other lost, all we can do is learn from this bloody damnable time and try to move on with our lives

  • I dont like this song. I mean its very forceful and poetic, but its also full of bitterness, hate and bile - deliberately so. Would even confederates "hate the declaration of independence too"? I like Civil war music, but there are much better songs for would be rebels to cheer on.

  • @juiced24valve Holding another human in bondage is wrong. then again blaming the entire south for the 1% ers is wrong too. What a dilemma. In Shermans defense he was fighting war as it should be fought, to incapacitate the enemy and win, on the other hand, you have people fighting for their homes and families not wanting an invading army to destroy their way of life that have nothing to do with economics, slavery and politics. As a southerner, I wonder sometimes what is what.
