Lyle Lovett drops by the shop and graces us with a private acoustic performance of "The Road to Ensenada" - a tune he wrote after a motorcycle trip with Bill Collings and other friends down Mexico's Baja Penninsula. In this video Lyle is playing his first Collings guitar built in 1979 in Bill's two bedroom apartment in Houston, TX. This guitar was used to record "If I Had a Boat" along with many other great recordings.

  • @daveweaversguitar This is Lyle's first Collings dreadnought (East Indian rosewood / German spruce) from 1979 built out of Bill's two-bedroom apartment on Bingle Rd in Houston.

  • Wild!

  • Superb song...really enjoyed it. Makes me glad to be part of the Collings family with a D2H.

  • A few years back I too was lucky enough to tour the Collings shop. We drove from Toronto, Canada to Austin. The staff was really great. They were gracious hosts. We were treated to a very intimate look at the Collings facility. We even had a chance to meet Bill himself.

  • Well, that was pretty damned cool! As an owner of a bunch of Collings, it's interesting to hear an early version of one of my guitars, sort of. And ain't Lyle cool? :-)

  • Just took the Collings factory tour last week. 'Like going to Graceland... only better! Bill has surrounded himself with gracious and dedicated craftspeople. Viva Collings!

  • I think that this is Lyle's older Collings with the herringbone purfling and abalone rosette combination.
