Telford's magnificent aqueduct on the Llangollen Canal, now part of a World Heritage Site, was drained for one of its regular structural inspections. Ten-year-old David Halligan won a competition to "pull the plug". After two hours of brilliant sunshine with the moon in the background, Sod's Law intervened and mist closed in just as the valve was about to be opened! The water plume took at least three seconds to fall 111 feet to the River Dee. The inspection, involving abseiling down the structure, was due to take five days. If all is well, the trough will next be emptied in 2019.
How long did it take to drain it?
