One of the most beautifully-shot films of all time. Thomas Newman's score is a masterwork for this film. Sam Mendes' commentary on the DVD is very interesting. Lots of subtle messages are in this film. The shot of Michael Sullivan Jr moving against the direction of a sea of people, shows he's different from them all & is not going down the same road as his father. Also how each death scene is preceded by water in one way or another. Great storytelling at it's best.

there was a period when i had a hacked DirecTV card that enabled all channels. this was on a payperview channel on repeat. i must have been 16 or 17 at the time, almost out of high school. every day for a week, immediately after coming home, i would go to my basement room and put the in-window air conditioner to 62 degrees, close my door, turn off all the lights, and put this movie on while i sat at my PC

Gentle. That how this move seems to have been made --with a careful touch and tender hands. Notice how the relationship between the boy and his father is subtly established in the upstairs hall, as he fetches his father --tentative, inquisitive, protective. You see a director at work here. Nothing is overdone in this film, which is additionally reflected in the quiet but strong performances, the lighting, the camera shots, the soundtrack. It's great story telling. Underrated film, indeed.
