Verifiably the Mahavishnu Orchestra's earliest live recording - my favorite one, as well. Why?

It comes from a radio broadcast by WAER-FM - live from the Jabberwocky Nightclub, Syracuse NY, on April 11 1971. And, without even having their first album released, the setlist spans the entire MO#1 career (which I think is significant - in terms of its break-up):

- Miles Beyond;
- Dream;
- Vital Transformation;
- Dawn;
- Sanctuary (NOT in the video); and
- Awakening.

I've cut the whole concert down to 10 minutes, remixed the audio and added video from a later show.

If, on the other hand, you want to hear the MO's LAST 1970s recording (the scary "Best Guitar Playing Ever"), go here...

This video was made to celebrate me scoring tickets for the McLaughlin Corea Quintet at the Sydney Opera House in February, 2009 - plus completion of a DVD-ROM with my "100 best" 2006-8 videos. And...

well, it's 9/11 again. On that same morning (Australian-time), I was featured as a musician in a national magazine (The Bulletin). I'd hoped to use the "success" to start playing guitar in America. In the end, I don't think anyone even SAW the magazine, in the rush for the morning papers. And things weren't the same after that.

Even for me - I'd been standing at the top of the WTC in September of 2000! I seem have a "September" thing - 1999: Sydney Morning Herald's "Best Personal Site On The Web", 2003: re-scheduled Yes concert (I wrote a MySpace blog about it once).

There are NO TITLES on the video, accordingly. NO "SHARING", either - without a link-back to www.youtube.com/avs002.

  • Timewaster. What is the point of screwing around with the work of this band. Do you think it's amusing? Get a life.

  • Well, I don't think you're a barrel of laughs, buster.

    What's yer problem, exactly (a'part from the obvious)?

  • This can't be that early... Billy Cobham already has his plastic drumset here. This is definitely not from 1971.

  • Thank you for thinking the "video" is real. I always appreciate that! The audio certainly is.

    The video is 'spliced' from BBC footage. I make a lot of these types of clips - check them all out.

  • the jabberywocky became hungry charlie's this is right near syracuse university I drank there in the 90s, cool basement heard many greats played there, thanks for posting

  • Thanks for posting!

    I'm amazed at the "University circuit" where so much Mahavishnu Orchestra material seems to come from (not to mention Zappa, from memory).

    We had NO interesting bands when I went to Uni!

  • man we were getting so high back then listening to all the great music. Birds of fire was one hell of a unreal album.

  • wow man what treat. i saw them in concert in cleveland :). what a guitarist.

  • There is something just not right with this subbmition... sorry. Didn't like it...

  • Wish you could've uploaded the entire setlist clip by clip. Would have been much better.

  • You stupid fuck..............avs 002 Dont waste my valuable time

  • While it might be the earliest live radio recording around, I have a copy of their very first gig as a band -recorded at the Gaslight In NYC . That was 7/21/71 . Sorry I am not at liberty to share it, just wanted you to know it exists.

  • I had the extreme pleasure to experience the Mahavishnu Orchestra live several times, the last time the recordinig of From Nothingness to Eternity. I am guitarist so trying to follow John is like constantly tripping over your big feet. The Orchestra was nothing like I ever heard before, then came the followers, Return to forever, The Eleventh House John and his band mates opened a pandora's box to opening the ears of hundreds of thousands to Fusion a Jazz super charged, with the power of rock!

  • The video has nothing to do with the audio. This is ridiculous.
