When his father was diagnosed with cancer in 1995, Don Benson MD, PhD had his career plans unexpectedly change. It was this intensely personal confrontation with cancer that prompted Dr. Benson to pursue a degree in medicine. Seeing how his fathers doctors were on the cutting edge of cancer therapies at the time made him realize the importance of clinical cancer research. He made a promise to himself and to his dad that cancer research would be his calling from that point on.
For Dr. Benson, the support of The ASCO Cancer Foundation has been crucial to his development
as a clinical cancer researcher. Dr. Benson was supported by an ASCO Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award (YIA) in 2006 and then an ASCO Cancer Foundation Career Development Award (CDA) in 2009. Watch the video to learn about his research progress and how The ASCO Cancer Foundation has supported his career.
