This is a run through of my repertoire required for Oberlin Piano Competition. Please comment!

Self Critique:

0:30 Rushed on the run which made me shortchange it
1:45 Rushed LH which made hands uneven.

Whole Second Piece didn't have the correct mood. Too bland. Needs to be more mysterious

The LH in the piece was a tad bit too loud
5:45-5:55 Could shape more
6:12 Missed note, I was lucky to recover
6:35-6:50 LH Melody needs to come out more. Middle notes WAY TOO loud!

7:35 Good starting tempo just rushed after that.
8:18 Need to clean that section up
8:30-8:38 Those octaves sucked!
Stupid screwup near end.

The 4th piece needs the most work. I still don't think I have it technically sound :(

  • Oh, actually I wasn't thinking about the first page. I automatically jumped to the 2nd last page because that's where it gave me fits. Actually I do take the RH notes with the LH. Depending on your hand size, try to keep your hand in the same position.

  • Thanks for the advice man, much appreciated. One other question (if you have time to reply!), in the 4th piece, did you find any misprints? say in bar 3 LH missing octave in the 3rd beat, or page 5 in the last bar of the meno mosso subito section RH missing a C natural in the E-flat group. As I am very new to Liebermann, I was wondering if those are indeed misprints or were they intended to be like that. Are there any other misprints I should be aware of in the set?

  • There are no misprints. There is only one edition to this piece so it's the original and has been edited and checked by Liebermann.

  • Hi, was wondering if you could tell me, in the 3rd one, do you take any left hand notes with the right hand? many thanks, great performance btw!

  • I don't take any left hand notes with the right hand. Are you asking specifically about the 2nd last page where there's a canon between the RH and LH? There, I'd just really work on voicing the left hand as your already familiar with the right hand part

  • Thanks for your reply! No actually, I meant even in the 1st page, say bar 7 4th beat (among many other places) the last 2 16th notes (c# & a#) are the same as LH in the 3rd beat. If you play that 4th beat with RH, could you tell me what fingering you used? Thanks for your time, really appreciate it. I have to learn this rather quickly, and don't want to waste time doing the wrong things, so I thought I'd seek some expert advice.

  • At bar 7: I take as follows RH 5 4 3 2 1 5 52 1 while taking teh last two notes in teh left hand. Similarily in 12 and 13. I don't thik I have any jumps in the right hand. You should be able to work your left hand 1 and 2 into the last note or two of a right hand passage that stretches. Also - I'd suggest making a mark in teh music whenever the general chords in either hand changes. It would be wasting time to try to read every accidental.

  • I think that you use too much pedal in the 4th movement, it should be disconnected and a lot more angry, so only use pedal where its marked. good speed though. vary the left hand so that there is a crescendo going up and diminuendo going down. Try to make your rhythms more exact. In the part where its marked meno mosso, you're playing it in duple rhythm! its triple!!! haha

Donntttt lose speed on the last page. Its better to have more wrong notes then to lose speed because you lose character.

  • but all together not bad

  • in my personal opinion i think it should be faster ....didnt sound connected enough.....

and u need to be angryer lol

  • Great performance!

By the way, I believe it is opus 29, not 49.

  • I am really awed by your musicianship...most people don't ask for advice, and I've never seen a self-critique. This is a great recording, and I hope you did well at the competition! I have never performed all four movements all together...it's frightening, really! But I hope to someday, and your video inspired me to work for it. (:

  • One question, in your VI movement, is it necessary to slow down at 9:13 to 9:25ish.? My child never slowed down here so lots of wrong notes are played. What do you think? By the way, I love how you make the staccatos so clear and even! They are very pleasant to hear!

  • Great performance, Vicent. I hope you had won the competition.

  • i think this is fantastic -- you are such a great pianist! re: the third movement -- have you heard melody brown do it on the brown five album "no boundaries"? it's a lot slower...maybe slowing down would make it more mysterious and "bring the melody out more," as you say.... but i find slowing down after i've practiced it fast sometimes difficult...but good luck!
