Both male and female voices were combined to create the sound of Farinelli's singing voice. The male voice was Derek Lee Ragin, a British countertenor and the female Ewa Małas-Godlewska, a Polish mezzo-soprano
Farinelli is a 1994 biopic film about the life and career of Italian opera singer Farinelli, considered one of the greatest castrato singers of all time. It stars Stefano Dionisi as Farinelli and was directed by Belgian director Gérard Corbiau.
Although Dionisi provided the speaking voice, Farinelli's singing voice was provided by a soprano, Ewa Malas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately then digitally merged to recreate the sound of a castrato.

Although based on real life events, dramatic license was taken. For example, Farinelli's brother is given much importance and Porpora is de-emphasized, while the movie offers a different explanation for how Carlo Broschi came to take the stage name Farinelli. George Frideric Handel, played by Jeroen Krabbé, is made out to be somewhat of a villain, but this is based on the competition between the theater at which Handel's music was played and the theater at which Farinelli sang.
Its musical director was the French harpsichordist and conductor Christophe Rousset. The musical recording was made at the concert hall, the Arsenal in Metz, with the orchestra Les Talens Lyriques.

  • I cried!

  • My father couldn't stand to watch it with me more than once... So I wore my earphones for a good twenty four minutes. I have only dreamed of having such a beautiful voice. As a young boy of eleven, I gained the voice of a hundred drums. My gain a blessing, my desire the curse. If only.....

  • @SkinnyGeneTigerBlood Castration does not mean the removal of your penis! That is penectomy. True art demands sacrifice. And this movie was indeed interesting :)

  • In my Music 210 course, I learned that castrati...well...pretty much castrated themselves for their art. I love my penis. No thanks. Talented guys, though.

  • Subarashii !!!! Wonderful .... But I wonder why does Handel still watches Farinelli's singing eventhough he detest him that much ....

  • Wow this movie's made of suck and fail; I no more believed this was the 18th century than I believe my neighbor's a zombie on Halloween cause he's got a shit load of makeup and torn clothes on. The castrati looks like Adam Ant circa Prince Charming era , the visual narration is simplistic and sophomoric, and people who rave about the 'beautiful singing' aren't the sort who listen to classical music, it seems, since it's merely adequate.

Sloppy awful stuff, of course the hoi polloi will dig it!

  • sad history, but the voice on the movie is very beautiful. If i could,i wish listen to him Farinelli in live.

  • Saikou!!! It's perfect,amazing!!

  • tonos que llegan a las entrañas
