The blue you see initially is the excess alcohol burning off, as the reaction continues you can see the orange better.

Neither, they are compounds [mostly chlorides] of the metals and the are in a little bit of a flammable liquid.

It can be but, I use potassium chloride here which can be found in sodium free salts in grocery stores.

What are you burning them on? It looks like they are on a glass disc, but how is the gas getting through, or aren't you burning them on gas?
