http://geeks.pirillo.com - http://live.pirillo.com - The Data Center Futures team built a prototype containing 100 dual-core Atom processors. They believe that data centers in the future will include many more low-power processors. This prototype is the first step in demonstrating their potential cost savings. http://chris.pirillo.com

  • I would get an Atom board to make myself a load-balancing multi-WAN router/firewall (probably running PFsense), only problem with these is you only get one expansion slot. That's what has prevented me from going ahead with it, as multi-port NIC cards are ridiculously expensive.

  • Intel needs to work on their Northbridge, if it dident need active cooling you would probably have super high reliability.. I have seen tests that the Atom is more powerfull then the P4 yet uses far less power

  • That looks pretty cool. I work in a Tier 4 data center and we just went upgraded our power and cooling systems and upgraded most if not all of our systems to leaner, meaner and greener counterparts. These devices would be great for some of our enterprise level stuff, I dont think they would have the power for our production level demand.

  • a single-core Atom motherboard costs about 70-80$ in my country.... pretty cheap I think...

  • this is good, i think these cpu's use like 5w , and a typical server cpu uses around 50-140, sooo....

  • indeed , if energy / money spent is saved , maybe some ppl can donate money back to the eco-system/ to the poor who is suffering hunger in developing countries.

Great minds!!! Keep going .For us and for our next generations!

  • looks neat :)

  • hmm, that idle test was cool, are they already as fast what they needed to be when server data is needed?

idle sleep is new thing in the server rooms, well some cpu:s can shutdown some cores if anything isnt needed them but it isnt a same thing especialy if you running a batchconf like they doo.

well, we waiting a "server atoms" ;)
