Here Tom is playing a groove in 9. The object here was to make the groove sound natural and musical as opposed to learning a groove in 9 and then playing against the music and hoping for the best. When you do that, a lot of time the result is a groove that merely fits the time signature of the music but lends nothing in the way of complimenting the music. Grooves like that also can sound like a skipping needle on a record or for you younger guys, a laser skipping on a cd!!

The grooves that Tom came up with and the commitment to which he played them, not only compliment the music but also are very original and interesting. He also does not overplay. Everything he plays is driven by the music and the emotion that the music pulls from him. Tom has orchestrated a great drum track here. Remember, playing licks is one thing, but the ability to come up with them on your own is quite another. Tom demonstrates this ability well here.
