The population of the Native Hawaiian monk seal is in crisis. As a result, recovery of this endangered species is a high priority for NMFS. Without supportive action and intervention, the species will likely become extinct. Currently, the population of the Native Hawaiian monk seal is less than 1,100, with a declining rate of about 4% per year. This short video includes select interviews with members of the Native Hawaiian community on Kaua`i, speaking about their knowledge about the Hawaiian monk seal.
aloha:)
we met close to Poipu beach and chatted as a female monk seal sunned herself for hours....
we are sooo thrilled you shared this wonderful video with us!
...all the intimate footage you have of baby and mom are absolutely gorgeous! And the words from the Hawaiian elders/scientists about respecting all things living is so very important especially now that there is a downfall of our environment. we love this video! thank you it is truly inspiring :)katia and eva from canada

This was beautiful and I so hope it helps our beautiful, endangered seals.I fear so much for them and despair at those who seem to hate them. Remember to comment on the enlarged Critical Habitat expansion in the Federal Register by Aug 31, 2011. They need all the help they can get. Mahalo.

Beautiful video - in aesthetics and substance... The subtle background rhythm is a great, thoughtful choice.

Jim, it was great to meet you tonight at the Po'ipu Beach at the sunset, with the green turtle boy :) I am about to watch the video. By the way, I saw a seal in the very epicenter of mayhem near Queen's Bath... just by himself - incredible animal. I have a picture.
