In February 1991, President H.W. Bush established a policy banning media coverage of the repatriation of fallen US servicemen. In February 2009, President Barack Obama overturned the policy. It will now be up to the families of the fallen servicemen to permit or deny media coverage. The first family to allow the media present at their son's repatriation was that of Staff Sgt. Phillip Myers of Hopewell, VA, 30, who died April 4, 2009 in Afghanistan.

The actual repatriations at Dover AFB in Deleware are usually not big press events. Like the description stated, the press was banned altogether from repaitrations from 1991-2009 and they can only attend now with the permission of the family. And since the Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs is on base at Dover, there really isn't a central place for public mourning like at Wootten Bassett or Carterton. Most of the press coverage is done in the servicemen's hometown.

i am for Britain and repatriations of our soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghan have always been a event covered by the media but that's because a repatriation of a soldier is a big event in the U.K. just search for Wootton Bassett and you will see. Is repatriations a big event in the U.S?

im currently stationed in dover and i work nights on the flightline... so occasionally when this is going on we get to see it.. some people have asked me "isnt it sad to see?" i just tell them "yes its sad seeing their families and stuff... but more than anything it is infuriating knowing some pussy in bumfuckaphganiraq killed one of my brothers"
