Ypsilon Berlin - LIVE Greek Music since 1994 - was established in the early 90's by a Man named Jannis who for many years ran this LIVE Greek Music program every weekend while he was the owner of the location with much success.
Till this day, there is no other location in Berlin that offers LIVE Greek Music and has had success as YPSILON has had.
After his retirement, Jannis, a long time employee of Jannis, took over and has done a good job of carrying on the tradition till this day (October 15, 2011).
We must ad that there was a short period of time where a non-greek took over the location and the place was quite, in fact, almost dead . I think that was mostly because, there was no LIVE music during that time among other things.
In retrospect, after many years of visiting the location during the "late" live music sessions, I developed a taste for Greek music and started to become familiar with various tunes. In fact, I have a few favorites but, don't ask me what their names are. GEMA can touch that because, many of the tunes that are performed there are old. So, no GEMA fees. I have to add that I was not able to connect with any of the guests over the years. That was no matter. I liked watching the band play until 5 maybe 6 in the morning and even later.
Sometimes, if you are lucky, there will be some guests that are fantastic dances. I mean "REALLY" good dancers. The guys just stare and the women get envious. When the party really gets going, you will find half of the guests dancing on the tables as they become elevated mini dance floors for the guest to feak on. Never seen anyone strip or take off their clothes though. In other places, yeah but, not there. They like to spin white napkins. While beer coasters are thrown up into the air and rain on you like giant snowflakes that don't melt. The waiter will come all of the sudden and start to smash dishes and yell out something in Greek in approval of a fine dance from a guest. No wonder the tables have to be refinished every two years or so.
Don't go there at 12:00 am and expect the party "Be slamin'". That is when the kitchen "Be Closed". So if you want to eat get there before that, call a head and reserve a table. There is a possibility you might not be able to get one.
After 12:00 am...well...anything goes and it get hotter as the the clock ticks into the weeee hours. Especially, during the cold hard winter nights of my sweet Berlin.
