I wanted my Son Hunter to be a drummer, but he gravitated towards guitar - worked out better actually because it's fun playing together.
I have way too much respect for truly great drummers to count myself among them - by professional standards, I'm a hack that hasn't seriously practiced in 40 years.
My Grandfather bought me that 24" Zildjian ride cymbal for my 16th birthday - it was $350 back then. After a year of working at McDonald's, I saved up enough to buy my Ludwig Vista Lite, Octa Plus set - drove from South Hadley, MA to Sam Ash in NYNY, with my friend Billy, to pick them up - slammin' day.
With his Flip video, Hunter shot me playing some tunes - It's amazing all that little condenser mic can record w/o being totally distorted by the extremely loud music & drums - I'm like Beethoven now, the drums + blasting music are the only things I can hear clearly - I feel like my hands and feet are petrified with rigor-mortise, so it's good to have evidence of some coordinated movement before I lock up completely;-)
By some accounts, I used to be a Drummer...
Nice "hack" job! I'm also a "vintage" drummer. I've give up on being Buddy Rich... my goal now is to just impress the grand kids! If only I sounded and looked as good as my vintage '68 Ludwig Hollywood kit still does! lol.
