Unfortunately I didn't get to actually watch the movie back when this clip came up, because the movie wasn't out yet.

If you actually watched the movie, he throws his spear in the initial fight right before this scene. Hence the sword.

No they wouldn't! They're properly distant away to use their spears. They only use swords when the Medes get RIGHT UP in their faces.

Hey In that close of range they would pull out there swords..I saw this on the history channel.

They wait until the last minute do defend against the arrows because they are awed and baffled by the number of the arrows. If you saw something like that, you would pause for a second to make sure what you were seeing was real.
