A few days ago Australian amateur astronomer and planetary imager
Anthony 'Bird' Wesley noticed a dark circle appear on the South Pole Region of Jupiter.
(top of the planet in this animation)
It has now been confirmed by JPL that it is the impact scar from an asteroid or comet.
This small animation was taken between 1.27 & 3.04AM Monday 20th July 2008
and also shows the moon 'Io' in transit and casting it's shadow down onto the gas giant.
