Our History:

The Sydney Dogs and Cats Home started out as a Council Pound, serving three local councils in 1946 and was part of the St George Animal Hospital.

In 1999, when ownership of the Hospital changed, and became charitable organisation known as The St George Animal Shelter. This changed the focus of the pound to becoming an active re-homing facility whose mission it was to re-home all suitable dogs and cats.

On 2 November 2006 there was a name change to The Sydney Dogs Home. By this time the Home had increased in size and was servicing 10 Councils and had a strong caring volunteer base, which is one of the aspects the Home prides itself on.

On 8 May 2006 a further name change was made, this time to recognise the numerous cats who shared the facility.

We are now known as the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home Inc. and have tax deductibility status.

Currently serving up to 11 council areas from the Northern Sydney to the Georges River, Eastern suburbs and Inner West, it is a unique facility that serves as a council pound and re-homing facility.

Our Goal

Our goal is to prevent the unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, loving, domestic pets. A second chance is given to all pets, you or old, and those with special needs.

Our Hours

Sydney Dogs and Cats Home is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our Dog viewing hours are 9am - 1pm Monday to Friday. Cat viewing hours are from 9am - 3pm Monday to Friday. Our weekend and public holiday viewing hours are 10am - 1 pm.

We care

The Home desexes, microchips, vaccinates and worms each pet before going to a new home. We do not knowingly re-home aggressive animals.

Funding

The Home is a registered charity and relies heavily on donations to care for, and feed, animals that need to find a new home. Councils provide funds for 7 days for an unmicro-chipped pets or 14 days for a micro-chipped pet, (for animals that are not re-claimed by their owners). After this time the Home needs to raise its own funding.

Re-homing

Our re-homing rate for dogs is between 90% - 94%, a figure higher than that achieved by any other council animal care facility. Our re-homing rate for cats is over 65% of non-feral cats.

  • What a gorgeous cat asleep on the sofa at the end!

  • Why doesn't the pound do the decent thing, and remove the link to Merlin and Grace to Youtube on their web site, and also remove the item on You tube, seeing poor Merlin was put down by the pound some 6 months ago after suffering from cancer for many months.

Isn't it time Merlin was allowed rest in peace.
