You should put some mechanism on the oars that allows you to to pull the spikes, so you do not have to do a vertical movement to get it back after the forward movement, like a plug in the oar part that your hand touchs, it will allow you to improve the spikes without the worry of get stucked and never slide again

Your oars need weighted tips and sharper spikes. And where is your life jacket Mr. Ric????
