How to Care for Your Flowers: Flower Care Tips from Nico De Swert | Pottery Barn

In this video, Floral Stylist and Interior Designer Nico de Swert demonstrates how to care for your flowers and make the best of your flower arrangements.

It is simple to check if the flowers are fresh. Nico suggests looking for brown spots and checking the outermost petals of the leaves and touch petals to see if they are free of bruises and healthy. Though for a few flowers you will need to examine more carefully. For example, for calla lilies, bend the stem to see if it snaps in the middle. If the stem does not break then it is young. Also he asks us to pay attention to the stamen and the texture of the flower head.

In order to increase the longevity of the flower arrangements, one basic principle is to provide enough water to the flower and the stem. Before placing the flowers in a vase, cut off the tip of the stem at forty five degrees. This increases the surface area and makes more water available to the flowers. To care for our flowers, Nico suggests removing thorns and foliage from the stem as they can cause bacterial growth when submerged in water that can kill the flowers eventually.

He also shares a trick on how to use floral foam and advises us to use the floral food packets that florists stock to increase the life of our flower arrangements.
