I'M SO THANKFUL // Thanksgiving Special (1/2)

Thanksgiving meant family. It always did, every year, and even though Joe had long since moved out of the Jonas household, he was still brought back every year. It was like an invisible force that pulled him towards his family and the big house with the holiday decorations and delicious smells -- even if he'd wanted to, he couldn't break away from it.

He was 30 now, a doctor, a husband, a father. Even though he'd celebrated his summer birthday just a few months before, he found himself eager to pack up his things and take his family on a road trip back to his parents' place for the holiday that meant turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy. Family was important; he'd realized that in college and had re-realized it when he'd started his own family with Taylor.

"Are you ready?" Joe walked into the bedroom he shared with Taylor, crossing the room to give her a kiss on the cheek. She was bent over a large suitcase, folding various articles of clothing neatly into the traveling compartment.

"Almost," she said with a smile as she turned her head to kiss him back, letting herself be lost in his warmth for a brief moment. Pulling away, she scooped up a handful of stuffed animals in her arms, extending them towards Joe. "What do you think? Pooky, Boo Bunny, Teddy, Mr. Giraffe, Pepper, or Rusty? Pick two," she asked for her husband's opinion. Their two kids wanted to bring all of their "animal friends" but Taylor knew that if they brought more than two, the toys promised to be lost.

Joe laughed, fingering the ear on his children's "Boo Bunny" as he pretended to make a hard decision. "Well, we brought Pooky and Teddy last time," he joked, watching the smile appear on Taylor's face. "So how about we give Rusty and ol' Mr. Giraffe here a turn?"

"I should've known you'd pick the two toys from {your} childhood," Taylor said as she carefully packed the well-loved stuffed animals into the suitcase as well.

"That's because you know me too well," Joe said, half-teasing half-serious. It was true, Taylor knew him better than he knew himself. Of course, it made her the perfect wife and sometimes Joe felt like an inadequate husband compared to how much she did for him. He was always scared she'd feel underappreciated and he never wanted her to feel that way because it wasn't true. Men were just... not good with words, most of the time.

"Will you be ready in five? We really have to go if we're going to make it to my parents' in time," Joe said, zipping up the suitcase as Taylor went to fix her hair. She nodded, giving him a smile as he took the suitcase downstairs.

"Jack, Haley!" He called as he headed out the door, listening for the quick footsteps of his kids running down the stairs. "Get in the car," he added as he unlocked the car and loaded up the suitcase and a few presents Taylor had insisted on giving to his family. In a few seconds Jack, 7, and Haley, 5, came running out the door behind him, tossing their miniature backpacks into the trunk before getting into the car. Joe listened to their excited chatter at going to grandma and grandpa's for Thanksgiving as he sat in the driver's seat and waited for Taylor to join them, knowing she never made him wait long.

In a few minutes they were headed down the freeway on the way to the Jonas', and Jack and Haley were fast asleep, exhausted from a day of packing and playing and getting ready for their grandparents' place. At a stoplight, Taylor caught Joe's eye and she smiled, reaching over to give his arm a squeeze.
