The Environmental Protection Agency is fining Magellan Midstream Partners more than $5 million for a series of oil pipeline spills in Kansas and five other Midwestern states.
Magellan is the company whose fuel storage tank burned in a massive fire caused by lightning earlier this month in Kansas City, Kan. More than a million gallons of unleaded fuel burned in the blaze.
Magellan has agreed to pay $5.3 million for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act.
The 11 spills occurred from a variety of causes, including corrosion, leaks, pipeline operator error, and third-party damage from farm equipment and bulldozers.
