What are the ICLP classes like? The teachers? Will I be forced to study 10 hours a day??

I interviewed my friend to give you the down and dirty on the ICLP Experience of learning Chinese in Taiwan.

Enjoy! More info at www.taipeitripper.com

  • Taipeitripper: I'm considering studying at ICLP. I visited Taipei over 10 yrs ago, so I probably remember stuff was cheaper, then (and I was staying at a friend's house) but how much is rent and monthly expenses? Thx in advance!

  • @WK2K My rent was 300 USD/month, eating out was from $3/meal to $10/meal...the cab rides, how much you spend at bars, etc. all depend.

    Tuition was like $10k/9months iirc

  • #4: MLC (CCU): Relatively slow-paced instruction with plenty of optional courses to allow for more immersion. However, lacking in traditional campus facilities e.g. gym? Due to the composition of the students, the lingua franca tends to be Mandarin. Teaches simplified characters and pinyin.

Can you comment shortly on this list to help me decide?

  • #3: I don't want to spend the majority of my time writing and reading, even though I do want to learn them, but speaking is more important to me at beginner level.

I’ve also come across some forums where someone listed this overview:

CLD (NTU): Intensive training with excellent staff. Teaches simplified characters.

MTC (NTTU): Highly intensive training leaving little time for extracurricular activities. Bitchy admin. Teaches traditional characters.

  • #2: Money is not really an issue as I’ve saved up quite some money for these kinds of things. So you don’t have to list the costs as a CON point for the programs.

Would you agree that the ICLP (NTU) is more geared towards formal communication, especially reading/writing. Teaches traditional characters.

Also is there more emphasis on the reading/writing part (one year program) than on the spoken part?

  • #1: Maybe you can answer some of my question and doubt about the different schools in Taiwan. My background:31 years old, dual native speaker (English and German) graduated in year of 2003. 7 years of international work experience. Had a few group Chinese lessons in Germany, but still consider myself a beginner. Can’t write or read any Chinese characters. I’m highly motivated and disciplined when it comes to studying things I really want to do.

  • What is a good way to stay consistently motivated and keep good energy towards the classes? Meaning should one pace themselves like a marathon in their classes? or is the system designed (with homework due everyday) to help keep the students afloat?

There only thing I would get nervous about ICLP is getting 'burned out'.

Your thoughts... thanks for all the response by the way!

  • @TaipeiTripper Thx for the info. Food seems about the same price, then. I remember getting some decent stuff for $3.

  • So, I emailed ICLP about my transcript, and they said just attach a letter saying why it's like that.

I'm just wondering, what kind of essays work, because I was going to approach it like a college personal essay.
