A major disruption in the plumbing system of Kilauea caused a three day pause in the flow of lava. After the flow resumed, some of the lava broke out of the established tube system and the resulting surface flows extended the ocean entry to a width of about half a mile.

The ocean entry shown where numerous small streams of lava fall into the water is more typical than the spattering type of last week. That ocean entry is still active, but is not as active as before. The first few days of an ocean entry are also more interesting to observe. After the new bench becomes established, it will grow far into the ocean and it is more difficult to observe safely from the old seacliff.

The ocean entry segment was recorded on August 12, 2008. Also shown is a surface flow emptying into an old lava tube. This was recorded on August 11, 2008. Both areas are located near Kalapana at the end of Highway 130 on the Big Island of Hawaii. This area is outside the east boundary of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

  • I can hear the waves crashing on the lava when I am out there, so I am disappointed that wind noise overcomes everything else. The camera has a wind filter setting, but it doesn't seem to do any good.
