In January 2009 Hamilton journalist James Harvey travelled to Cap-Haïtien, Haiti to document a 10 kilometre race hosted by Hamilton running boutique The Runners Den and the Hamilton chapter of OMS Canada.
Since 2001 these Hamilton organizations have raised over $500,000 to help the grinding poverty in Cap Haitian. This amount raised in Hamilton has helped build a school, church and orphanage. Hosting any such event in a city with so much poverty and apathy would prove to be difficult. The race hosted over 230 runners hailing from all of Haiti and over 400 locals volunteers for the event. The race succeeded and the runners finished proving to be an amazing feat for the organizers, the city and most importantly the people.
James Harvey writes "The people in Haiti are so graceful. When you go there and see that they have absolutely nothing, they're starving, there is no opportunity at all but at the same time they're so happy and so proud. I don't understand that and that's why I embrace them. Their way of life is so hard but they cherish every morsel of life they have. They deserve so much more."
