The final destination of a 3mi hike up to the waterfall and the kids give a harsh assessment. Hikes starts in Temescal Canyon and into Topanga State Park which are part of the Santa Monica Mountains, actually a huge national and state park area. There's almost 600miles of trails and the backbone trail which runs the length of the part is 65 MILES long! Here's a cool interactive map: http://tinyurl.com/6l4smq
This fall really flows right after substantial rainfall. I just hiked up here, and there is lots of run off in early January 2011.

wheres Temescal canyon?? and topanga?
I am always at Sycamore Canyon in these Santa Monica Mountains, mountain biking and hiking, and there is a backbone trail at Sycamore Canyon , but it leads only to Overlook fire rd on the West , and to Sycamore Canyon rd on the East.
google coordinates for this backbone MTB trail:
34.110219,-119.026901
