In November of 1990 the defending State 3A Champion Kannapolis Wonders and Concord Spiders were fighting as usual for the SPC Championship and the Victory Bell in Kannapolis Memorial Stadium. The Wonders were down 19-7 in the waining moments of the 4th quarter. With just under two minutes left in the contest the Wonders scored on long pass from Maurice Blakeney to Zra Lipscomb to get within five of the Spiders. The Spiders would get the ball back but were unable to sustain a drive to run the clock out.
The Spiders would punt the ball back to Kannapolis with just 57 seconds left and the Wonders 70 yards away from a game winning touchdown and only one timeout. By the cool head and strong arm of Maurice Blakeney, the Wonders connected on two pass plays to get them just inside the Spider ten yard line with seven seconds remaining. Blakeney would roll out left with several Spiders hanging on his feet and throw a pass up in the air in the direction of two Spider defenders and one Wonder Scott Jordan who was already falling out of bounds. His feet remained inside the endzone as the tipped ball found its way into Jordan's out stretched hands. The rest is Wonder history. This came to be known in Wonderland as "The Catch"
Twenty years have passed and I still tell everyone that this was the greatest sports moment I ever witnessed in person. Thanks for the memory.
