From his 1976 album "Surprises"

Herbert Jay Solomon (Born Brooklyn, New York, April 16, 1930 July 1, 2003), better known as Herbie Mann, was a Jewish American jazz flautist and important early practitioner of world music. Early in his career, he also played saxophones and clarinets (including bass clarinet), but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute and was perhaps jazz music's preeminent flautist during the 1960s.

Emily Cissy Drinkard Houston (born September 30, 1933,Newark, New Jersey,), better known as Cissy Houston, is a Grammy Award winning American soul and gospel singer. She led a very successful career as a backup singer for such artists as Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, and Aretha Franklin, and is now primarily a solo artist. She is the mother of singer and actress Whitney Houston and aunt of Dionne Warwick and the late Dee Dee Warwick.

  • We knew him. he was a great guy. my father designed his Embryo Records logo. he lived his music, very mellow, friendly, liked to jam or just drift in conversation, he explored world music before i even knew what it was.

  • saw them in L.A. around this time, Whitney got nothing on her

  • "Must" in my radio shows,...

  • I wish Herbie were still with us, he was a fantastic flautist along with having a great feel for soul music, and apparently a great guy, and this is coming from someone who never met him.
