Colonel Van T. Barfoot joined the United States Army in 1940. As a sergeant he took part in the Allied campaigns of World War Two (WWII) in Europe (Italy and France). While in Italy in one event he eliminated three German machine gun nests, captured 17 of the enemy. Destroyed with a bazooka a lead German tank column of three, causing the other two tanks to scatter. He then helped two seriously wounded soldiers walk back to get medical attention nearly a mile away.

He was promoted to lieutenant. Months later he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor CMA for his heroic actions in Italy. He was given the choice to be awarded the medal in the USA or there in the field. He choice was to receive the award in the field keeping him with his unit.

He went on to serve with the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the Army as a Colonel. Recently at age 90 he moved into a community of Henrico County, a suburb of Richmond, Virginia. In front of his home he placed a free-standing vertical flag pole. Every morning retired Colonel Van T. Barfoot raises the United States flag on that pole. Every evening Colonel Barfoot lowers the flag from the pole.

Mr. Barfoot received a letter from the Sussex Square Services Home Owners Association advising that free-standing flag pole was in violation of the Association rules. They advised that an angled pole attached to the house would be permissible. Colonel Barfoot refused to remove the free-standing flag pole. The Association advised they would fine him $10.00 a day for every day that pole remains standing. The governor of Virginia, Timothy M. Kaine, and U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner, both came out in support of Colonel Barfoot.

This 90 year old hero, war veteran who earned the nations highest military honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor, served in three wars, fought the fascist, the Nazis, and the Communist, once again is facing fascism, 21st century style. The Colonel has earned the right to fly the American flag from any point or manner on his property.

A portion of a state highway in Mississippi, Barfoot's native state, was named in his honor this fall.

  • FitnessBobby well we all saw propagandabuster waring Japanese flag unside down. Didn't mean a thing to most of us.

  • Hajimashibhada: Yes I became aware of my mistake after I posted the video. I have no excuse for my mistake because I was advised by a few people the correct way to wear. For some unacceptable reason I thought I was wearing it correctly. Sorry about that.

  • Col Barfoot should have charged the homeowner's association material cost, his labor wages for erecting the flag pole, as well as labor of love and respect to daily raise and lower the American Flag.

God Bless Col Barfoot and America!

  • this one is one of the most amazing story i heard

    /watch?v=i8De99EkBmE

  • @hajimashibhada Oh ok, I know what you mea now. Yeah I didn't know if you were talking about the Imperial Navy flag or not.

    Thanks, have a good day!

  • @222bobafett yes you are right it is symmetrical but this was a headband with couple of Chinese characters written on it. However Emperial navy flags with red stripes does have right side up both vertical and horizontal positions.

  • @hajimashibhada

I'm not being mean or anything, but I was just curious how it's possible to where the flag of Japan upside down. I thought it was symmetrical? Thanks!

  • LOL..."...he's got the facists again on his back..." Truth. Nice piece.

  • Wow, I really do respect this colonel.

  • A no flag pole rule? And they actually try to enforce it? Thats one of the most retarded things i have ever heard. Seriously who makes stupid shit like that up?

  • ason....looking at California...absolutely legal weed is better than street. You have a much better selection also. Seeds wouldn't become any more popular than home beer brewing kits and backyard stills. Sure some would do it.

The number of people going to jail in this country over small amounts of pot is ridiculous & nothing more than a cash cow to governement agencies. Jail is for people who are dangerous to society not themselves. If they commit crimes they should jailed for them.

  • ason....I don't consider someone who drinks a couple beers, has a glass or two of wine or smokes a joint after work weak. I certainly don't understand your comment stating that if 1-100 can use them without addictions you don't see a point in using them at all. WTF?

Insurance companies are going to have to adjust. Do you think anyone really tells their insurance company they are smokers?
