Glassblowing
Skeels Glass 1992-1994 Rondel Project. Electro-hydraulic rolling yoke supports a 2" shaft x 4" head blowpipe. Articulates up/down, in/out, angle-up/angle-down, clockwise/counter-clockwise rotation and rotation speed control.
Glass rondel was blown backwards on the pipe; Glass is pierced with a 1/2 inch metal rod from the far end to an appropriate depth (about 12 inches in this piece) then inflated using a compressed air steam stick.
Total working time was 3 hours per rondel.
Rondels were either 36 inch (70 pounds) or 48 inch (105 pounds) with a thickness from 4 inches at the center nub to 3/4 inch at the edge. Rondels were made over-sized and trimmed to diameter using standard glass cutter and large breaking pliers.
Rondels made one layer of a dual glazed unit. Finished units are installed in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple for the Church of Latter Day Saints.
