Ruth Askevold, is a GIS Analyst, Historical Ecology with the San Francisco Estuary Institute. Discusses an 1806 early view of San Francisco looking southward. It shows many things including a small picture of a few natives in tule canoe. SFEI projects range averages 200,000 acres. Initial work starts with gathering tons of data from archives, museums, historical societies, that are compiled into maps that become geo-referenced. Narratives are also included into the database. 1930s aerial photos great source for continuous coverage and can see ghosts on land, ex: historic channels. SFEI often uses ERDAS software, and will fly over areas for gathering current information. Contra Costa: 300 images!

She assembles various geo-referenced photos and then can go back and forth in time and reveal details of historic landscapes.
