When Rangers fans rioted in Newcastle in 1968 The English press said 'They swarmed into Newcastle like Attila and his Huns.' The Term Hun became a new name for drunken thugs and was used by a lot of Scottish fans in the 70s about each other. Subsequent rioting in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham in the 70s by Rangers fans saw the nickname stick to them. It is not sectarian and refers simply to their thuggish and bigoted element and is, in view of Manchester 08, still quite fitting.
