Jan Peerce & Giorgio Tozzi sing the famous Serenade ("Overhead the moon is beaming") from Romberg's "The Student Prince." Franz Allers conducts (most likely the Columbia Symphony Orchestra). This is from the 1963 Columbia "Student Prince" excerpts album (also with Roberta Peters) which many consider to be the best album with excerpts from this operetta on record. Unfortunately it has not been released on CD (officially!). If anyone wants some other specific excerpts from this album posted please ask in a comment!

  • Never officially but I have it on a privately transferred CD. Contact me if interested.

  • @VinylToVideo I hope third time will be the lucky one that brings a response as to how to obtain a copy of the Jan Peerce, etc. version of The Student Prince. Thanks, Henry

  • I have a recording of this on CD as well, and this has gotta be the best version of this show. Roberta Peters blows the doors off Kathie. And Peerce is older than 60 here? I never knew that before, but it makes sense, since he discovered Peters. He rocks.

  • @luvperu1 Remember Peerce is past 60 years old here if you compare him with Lanza, go to the Peerce 1940 version of this also on you tube when he was 36 years old and live but of course in fairness to Peerce that was live in 1940 and Lanza's is 1953 in better studio sound and he was in his early 30's. Still the Lanza recording is very beautiful and he was in Prime sound.

  • @beachfrontal--Thank you for the share David-

This makes my heart take flight--- Beautiful--

Now I have to come back down to earth to

    finish this....I Love Mario Lanza's version-As

which takes the cake for me--I would have to

go now and listen to Mario..Will hit the sub and

    friend...Hugs Polly

  • I would love some more tracks from this cd by far the best version I have ever heard of this operetta absolutely fabulous you have made my day did you upload more tracks from thei cd I bet you have been snowed in by requests for specifics.I on the other hand want to hear it all hahahaha absolutely made a day here worthwhile this has really made it for me, the Mario Lanza version is good too , butthis takesthe biscuit for me. David if I< have to sub to hear more then so be it lol. subbed.

    GC

@glomur1. Not, it is not higher than Mario LANZA, her interpretation is different. MarioLANZA, is the tenor with the crystal-clear voice and the single emotion!

  • @arpeggio1358 Dear Laurie, not sure exactly, but am pretty sure Peerce didn't retire until his stroke in 1980, when he was 76. Over the last four years, I'd seen him frequently on Merv Griffin's and Johnny Carson's shows. He was then a little shorter of breath and less resonant than in his prime. But good heavens, Jan STILL sang extraordinarily well -- his tone, though somewhat diminished, remained clear and steady:) --

  • @arpeggio1358 Dear Laurie, I first heard Peerce when I was eight and Merrill a year later, both on Firestone Christmas albums. Merrill's renditions of "Three Great Kings" and "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" can still be found on YouTube:) -- Kirsten was the first soprano whose voice I actually liked! Well, limited outlook on the part of an eight-year-old, etc. Though I found Kirsten, even then, much better than Sally Ann Howes, the English musical-theater soprano:) --
