First Person: Inside St. Louis Pit Bull Shelter

The Humane Society of Missouri is sheltering hundreds of pit bulls confiscated in the largest dog-fighting raid in US history. At one point, it cared for more than 400 dogs and 100 puppies at its St. Louis emergency shelter. (Nov. 10)

@ginben1 haha! true, but enough of cheap shots, were are not in middle school. dogs, come in many forms and they are ALL capable of being good companions. (with some exceptions) that is why we have bred them for. to fill up the requirement to fit the task. this isn't new, and we know dogs helped on the growth of human civilization. this dogs were bred as a war dog. a hard working, very smart and fearless. not as a pet. i love dogs and love their history. but a danger can come as an 80 lb dog.

@ginben1 well, small breeds do the same as any other breed. and it is not the dog but the people who like them. bully breeds are for bullies and protection. what do you need protection from. get a gun. and ignorants don't care to see. apparently you have not heard any news of pitbulls tearing face of and killing other small breeds. they were bred to be what the are bullies. and i love dogs, i just wouldn't bring my chihuahua near your dog. and you wanting me dead just proves my point.

Why exactly is it for its own good??? What did this dog ever do to deserve this treatment. The least that can be done is to let her live the remainder of her life in a loving, caring environment. WE OWE HER THAT MUCH! You are a poor excuse for a human being.

Someone should euthanize YOU. Since when does America punish the VICTIM of a CRIME???? They dogs do not have the natural instinct to destroy. My pittie is the most loving dog I have ever had. He wants nothing more than a good cuddle and a kind word. Your comment shows just how ignorant you are of the nature of the breed. There are too many people out there like you and this is why this abhorrent practice continues. BAN THE DEED, NOT THE BREED!

Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs with huge hearts. =) They'll live on forever.

@bulletinman To respect life is to only kill for survival, to eat. Never for sport or profit. You like fighting? Watch UFC. These animals fight because their lives depend on it and are never taught any different. Im not sure you know what usually happens to the losing dog. I grew up with a rescue Pit and the only job these dogs should ever be burdened with is being a loyal and loving friend.
