I started this drawing as a challenge to myself to push my skills to better detail and texture. A learning experience for me. When I scanned the finished portrait and saw it on the screen I started to cry. He looked so alive! Here you can watch the WIP as it develops.

The song is from my very favorite singer Amy Grant and is what I listened to most while drawing each portrait of him. It conveys how I feel about our Champion. The other two portraits show when I am dedicating those specific words to either Dr Richardson or The Jacksons. I miss you Bobby!

EDIT: 1/28/08: I raise $3619.00 selling prints, greeting cards, and Christmas ornaments from this image. I donated it to the Fund to Fight Laminitis at New Bolton Center. I went there myself and met Dr Richardson. Check out my blog to read about my trip and see photos!!

  • Wow! I can't believe you're not getting paid for these! These are really beautiful!

  • I do get paid for prints, greeting cards, and Christmas ornaments for this image. I have donated the profits to the Fund to Fight Laminitis at New Bolton Center. You can read all about my trip on my blog. The link is posted in the About this video information. Thanks for the comment!!

  • did you use pencil?

  • Yes this is pencil.

  • wow, thats really good!

did you just use a regular pencil or diffrent leads in mechanical?

  • I have the mechanical clutch pencils... I like the weight of them. The leads I have are 2H, HB, 2B & 4B. I find I use 2B for almost the entire drawing. I may use the others but very little. I like to go over the whole thing in circles with the 2H when it is finished... and that is because it is a harder lead and will drive the softer graphite into the pores of the paper... gives it a nice finished look.
