How to draw hands.

Show notes: Drawing people from memory and imagination. Drawing human hands. Modifying the basic shape of the palm. First draw the most over-all form to find it in 3D space. It gets wider on the knuckle side and narrower by the wrist, flatter by the knuckles and fatter by the wrist. Look at how and when the palm flattens. It has the tendency to fold in and bowl out in shape, loosing the wedge shape. You can bend the wedge shape, think of it like a canoe or a boat you can push in on the inside and bend out on the outside. Lob off this corner here. After you find the general shape you can amend and change the shape. See the form of the hand come out as if you are sculpting it. First find it's main movement, then ad the thumbs effect on the palm. You start with one shape and then change it to the more complex forms that palm can take on. Somewhere between a spoon and a spatula. You want to create and ark. The four knuckles, index, middle, ring and pinkie knuckles. Each are closer to the wrist.

  • I have the hardest question... If I wanted to draw i hand and Palm with fingers (Facing towards the Portrait) how do you get the curves in the fingers to make it look like there half bent. (Cause in my picture some guys dying)

  • @allibath This is hard because the direction of the digits and the contour of the digits are not exactly the same. I would first draw the fingers like they are made up of cylinders, one for each digit. The sides of the cylinders are the direction each digit is going. Then I would add curvature to those lines to show how the thickness of the fingers change. Good luck!

  • @drawtips Thanks. Your help was great, I got an A for this assignment on hands.

  • when seeing this video i had to think about old shool 3d videogames. the first virtue fighter for example. back then they had to simplify their figures to squares, boxes etc. they of course went for a more comicy style with that but its basically the same what you see in this video. its not gonna make a detailed realistic figure but it helps a lot when you want to figure out proportions.
